Born in Lagos, Nigeria and raised in Houston, Texas, Toyosi Shusi uses fashion design as a form of self-expression. While pursuing a degree in Chemical Engineering from The University of Texas she had the desire to challenge herself creatively in ways that engineering couldn’t. So she taught herself how to sew and began making garments exclusively using African fabrics such as ankara, kente, mud cloth, and more. Toyosi was able to reconnect with her West African roots by studying the complex history of fashion across the African continent. Toyosi hopes that her line, Shusi, which is Yoruba meaning to interfere with, will change the landscape of the fashion industry by bringing African-inspired designs to the forefront.
